Green Skills Development in the Indian Himalayan Region

Green Skills Development will be of high importance in the post-pandemic world. An innovative eight-day workshop took place at the Garhwal Regional Centre, Srinagar Garhwal, Uttarakhand, in March last year entitled "Rural Technology Connect for Green Skill Development, Harnessing Bioresource Potential for Livelihood Enhancement and Natural Resource Management in the Central Himalaya". The objectives of the workshop were to define the concept of green skills, awareness generation about green skill among the employment youth, provide training and skill development of unemployed youth through exposure visits and demonstration and to facilitate coordination among different organizations for knowledge sharing. About 30 unemployed youth and farmers belonging to different villages of the region took part in the workshop. The participants were provided on-site training and demonstration at on-site and presentation on various technological interventions i.e. protected cultivation, vermicomposting, biocomposting, value addition of wild and agroproduce, floriculture, mushroom cultivation, restoration of dedgraded land, nursery development, medicinal plants cultivation, poultry farm and environmental conservation by various subject experts. The participants were also given an opportunity to visit different laboratory and demonstration sites developed by various departments at university. During the workshop an exposure visit cum learning tour was arranged to the participants in which they interacted with different stakeholders working at grassroots level and motivated them to learn from them and adopt the technical skill which these stakeholders followed. In concluding session, the participants were motivated to explain about the experience and knowledge that they have gained during the workshop.
