Ecological & Socially Just Tourism can not come about only by words; grassroots action is also needed. Since 2004 we have been providing microgrants to eco-projects initiated & implemented by our Members, according to the ECOCLUB.com philosophy and aims . You may find information on projects funded so far by following the links at the top of this page. In 2010, ECOCLUB.com will offer micro-grants to new community projects that promote ecological & social justice. We have doubled our awards budget to Euros 6,000 so that up to three eligible projects can receive a Euros 2,000 grant each. As always, the winning projects will be democratically chosen through a Member vote and the implementation process will be transparently documented online. Timeline: The Call for Projects closed on August 1, 2010 and no more project proposals are accepted until next year. We waited for additional information and modifications on submitted project proposals until August 10, 2010. On August 11 we determined that four project proposals are eligible. The candidate projects were posted online with links from this page on Sunday 15 August. A Member vote held until 22 August determined the three winners. Theme: The theme of our 7th Annual Awards is "Ecosocial Justice Through Tourism". We called on our Members to consult with their local community and submit tourism-related projects that can help rectify ecological and social injustices at the community level. Who could apply: The Awards were open to all, including past winners and non-Members. Each project had to be officially undertaken by a legal entity (including the self-employed). Prize: The total amount set aside this year amounts to Euros 6,000 to be equally shared by up to three winners upon successful completion of their projects. Submission Deadline: 1 August 2010. Members were encouraged to apply as soon as possible so as to have time to make changes to their project proposal as to meet eligibility guidelines. Project Eligibility: We sought new, independent, realistic, implementable projects which provide tangible, non-abstract, results, compatible with our philosophy of Ecosocially Just Tourism and this year's theme. Projects should have a strong social element, be tangible, small-scale, should be focused on the applicants' local community, improving its life and meeting urgent needs in a direct manner and have a sustainable, lasting impact. We particularly encouraged projects in 'developing' countries which constitute/promote a cooperative/ community-owned approach. The applicant should have discussed the real needs of their local community, and decided on this project through a direct democratic, participatory approach. Before submitting projects applicants should have duly researched all legal, technical & practical aspects. Projects should not depend on the performance of 3rd parties, or on factors outside the applicants' control. The applicant should be directly involved with the implementation of the project, on location. We only accepted projects that cost up to a maximum of Euros 2,000 to fully implement, including all costs such as wages, fees and materials. Projects should not already be under way, should not also be funded or part-funded by other sources, or submitted for funding to any other organisations and should not in any way depend on the performance of other projects or of other organisations. Candidate Projects & Winner Selection : There were four candidate project proposals as follows: Project Proposal A - Chile: 'Ruka' Traditional Food court - 2nd Winner (27.3% of the votes) Project Proposal B - Pakistan: Traditional Woodcarving School - Runner Up (9.1%) Project Proposal C - Colombia: Training for Birdwatching - 3rd Winner (24.2% ) Project Proposal D - Nepal: Visitors Resource Centre - 1st Winner (39.4%) The three winners were chosen in a direct democratic fashion through an online vote by the Members of ECOCLUB.com, held between August 15-22, 2010 Winning Project Implementation: The winning projects were all initiated by September 1, 2010 as planned and must be fully implemented by December 1, 2010. Over the past 5 years, since 2004, on the 1st of July, to celebrate our founding anniversary, we have been funding & part-funding micro eco-projects initiated & implemented by our Members, according to the philosophy and aims of ECOCLUB. You may find information on the funded projects by following the links at the top of this page. In 2010, ECOCLUB.com will offer micro-grants to projects initiated & implemented by our Members, that promote ecological & social justice in local communities. We are doubling our awards budget to Euros 6,000 (amounting to around 40% of our proceeds from Membership fees in 2009) so that three projects can receive a Euros 2,000 grant each. As always, the winning projects will be democratically chosen through a Member vote and the implementation process will be transparently documented online.
