Description
Over 67,000 native trees will be planted within the Masingini Forest in collaboration with the Zanzibar Forestry Department, including endangered and medicinal plants with a movable irrigation system to improve seedling survival during the dry season. A complementary Forest Awareness Programme will engage more than 700 secondary school students, who will plant 7,200 trees at school, in students’ home gardens and in the forest. The 1,800-hectare protected Masingini Forest is northeast of Zanzibar City is a crucial water catchment area and habitat for the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
