Jordan: Plans for Copper Mining inside the Dana Biosphere Reserve

Government plans, going back to 2016, to mine up to 106 sq km (around a third) of the famous biosphere reserve, under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage status, have sparked a public outcry.  Jordan's Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), which manages the reserve sine 1989, has also repeatedly condemned the plans citing groundwater pollution and threats to endangered and endemic species.
